Galax, VA - Wired Road Connecting Fiber Customers

The Wired Road is currently building new fiber connections to customers in Carroll County along Airport Road and in the Farmers Market area. Backbone fiber has been extended from The Wildwood Industrial Park to the Carroll County Industrial Park along Airport Road. Underground and aerial construction on the main routes has already taken place. If you live along the new fiber routes you may have received postcards and mailings regarding the new service availability, including information on signing up. Free fiber connections to homes and businesses along the route are made available through a combination of an Appalachian Regional Commission grant and Wired Road project funds. Funding for connections is limited, to see if you are eligible for a free fiber connection, or to see if you are otherwise able to receive service, please submit the service request form on the Wired Road website thewiredroad.net.

Free wireless hotspots are being set up at the Galax Public Library and at the Crossroads Institute. Lingo networks is installing and hosting these hotspots supported by Wired Road circuits. More locations are being identified. To support the community during the COVID-19 related restrictions, the Wired Road will provide free circuits to any provider run hotspots in its service territory, as long as the hotspot is free for public use.

The Wired Road is entering its twelfth year of operation. Planning for the effort was begun in 2007, and the first fiber and wireless customers began receiving service in 2008. The Wired Road operates an extensive high-speed fiber network that includes more than 40 miles of fiber in Independence, Grant, Galax, Hillsville, and the Wildwood Industrial Park. More than twenty wireless Internet access points provide residents and businesses with Internet service.
